China Calls on Hungary to Support Stable China-EU Relations
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived in Budapest on Wednesday, met with Prime Minister Viktor Orban to discuss bilateral cooperation and broader regional ties, the Foreign Ministry said.
During the meeting, Wang highlighted the broader significance of collaboration between the two nations. “The successful story of China-Hungary cooperation will have a demonstrative effect on Europe and the world, and China looks forward to Hungary playing a positive role in promoting the healthy development of China-EU relations,” Wang told Orban.
He praised Hungary for maintaining what he described as a longstanding friendly approach toward China, characterizing Beijing as a dependable strategic partner for the long term. Wang also voiced confidence that Hungary would continue backing China on matters it considers central to its national interests.
“China will also, as always, support Hungary in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests, forging a successful path suited to its national conditions, and oppose external interference in Hungary's internal affairs,” he said.
Orban, in response, expressed appreciation for China’s economic progress and signaled openness to expanding Chinese investment in Hungary. He noted that Chinese firms are already among the country’s top foreign investors and pointed to the Budapest-Belgrade railway project as a catalyst for economic expansion and improved living standards.
The Hungarian leader also reiterated his country’s adherence to the one-China policy, according to the statement.
Earlier in the visit, Wang held discussions with Hungary’s foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto.
China and Hungary first established diplomatic relations in 1949, and their trade volume reached $16.2 billion in 2024.
